What an impressive cohort of musical talent in Peterborough!
Two years ago I was invited to The Peterborough School to adjudicate their Battle of the Bands as well as judge guitar and percussion in the Festival of Music. Having unfortunately missed last year, I returned in 2017 for another special day.
This year there were no less than six acts – covering a multitude of genres from Rock to Folk, Pop to Soul and Blues Brothers! There was a wide range of ages involved as well – all the way from year 7 to 13! With this breadth of style and skill it was a hard event to judge as each group had great positives in their performance.
I’m a fan of authenticity and each performance was very natural – in front of the entire school and staff – which is a daunting feat to achieve, especially at year 7. However these moments become enduring memories. Aside from playing in the school orchestra and ensembles, I remember one of my first gigs of my own material was in the school hall, at a lunchtime concert, in front of the whole school. It was nerve-wracking – but essential training.
I love visiting The Peterborough School. It is perfectly sized, overflowing with talent and an excellent Director of Music, Helena McKillop. The bands were hard to compare to each other. Great song choices and clear evidence of rehearsal – but it was clear to all and myself, that the Rock Band delivered an almost faultless performance that was engaging and technically professional. Well done all!
