Following the success of Keith’s session at the National Music Education Expo, he was approached by the cancer charity CLIC Sargent to run a music residential for teenagers living with cancer.
The week-long residential based at Stonar School, Wiltshire was the third of its kind and the vision of Phil Day. Tutors were invited from all genres and included Will Lang, Simon Rix (Kaiser Chiefs), Honor Watson (Escala) and Sam Brookes.
Keith opened the week with exercises to encourage the group – at whatever level of songwriting ability – to begin to process their experiences in to lyrical structures. Beginning with whole group activities and then separating in to smaller teams, the young people were able to develop skills that enabled them to express in song what they otherwise possibly found hard to say.
As the week continued, songs were written, arranged and rehearsed and a showcase performance followed in front of an audience of French exchange students.
Finally, there was ample opportunity to record the songs in the temporary studio set up for the week.
